I am a puzzle

With thousands of pieces
That don’t always seem to fit
Yet somehow always connect
To form the bigger picture

Each piece shows only a portion
Each piece so different, with individual meaning
But if you can bind them all together
It creates something more than what you’d expect

Many pieces illustrate tradition
On the 1st December, creating the perfect tree
Midnight mass on Christmas Eve
Family gatherings… on all occasions

There are unique pieces, few are found in puzzles
Strong spirituality but rough history
Indian doughnuts or bullets on New Years, jingle dresses growing up
A constant struggle to try and make these pieces fit

On a deeper level you find pieces of belief
Sections shaped by parents’ guidance
Equality of men and women, working hard for what you have
That everything happens for a reason, you have to trust in that

The base for all these pieces is the same
The strength that holds this puzzle together
An underlying layer which will always be family
The most important thing, the highest priority

These pieces are so diverse
Too many to describe or even understand
But when they are placed and joined together
And you can see past one single section

You just see me

This is an assignment I will never forget, and will probably try some way in my classroom at some point. I wrote this in grade seven when our teacher made us sit with our heads down in silence in the dark while she popped popcorn, and then we had to write about it.
